The Alma College Wrestling team finished day one of the Pete Wilson Invitational on Friday afternoon. The tournament, hosted by Wheaton (Ill.) College, features wrestlers from 32 schools participating in 10 different weight classes.

The Scots find themselves in ninth place after the first day of competition, a seven-spot improvement from last year's results.

Fr. Tyler Foley (New Hudson/Brighton) fell in round two of the 125 bracket but was victorious in his third match to remain in the hunt for third place in the bracket. Classmate Dan Martinez (Westland/Benjamin Franklin) followed the same path as Foley, but at 133, and remains alive for the third place finish.

At 141, Jr. Casimer Strzynski (Ludington/Ludington) lost his opening match but was victorious in his consolation bracket bout to put himself in the hunt for a third place finish tomorrow.

Sr. Matt Tuttle (Reading/Reading) won his two matches on the afternoon in a stacked 165 bracket. The third seeded wrestler in the bracket, Tuttle advances to take on Joe Schindle of Mount Union tomorrow morning.

So. Jamie Jakes (Dearborn/Divine Child), the seventh-seeded wrestler in the 174 class, also collected two wins on Friday. Jakes will grapple with second-seeded Richardo Plummer of Messiah on Saturday.

Day two of the Pete Wilson Invitational is tomorrow, Feb.1, with the first match set for 9:00 AM.
