Alma College Wrestling hosted the Alma Open on Saturday

The Alma College wrestling team welcomed nearly 110 wrestlers from all over the country to the Art Smith Arena on Saturday for the annual Alma Open. This all day event featured wrestlers from the  NCAA Division-I ranks down to the National Junior College Athletic Association level.

"Overall, I think people were really impressed," said Alma Head Coach Todd Hibbs. "For only being a program for a few years but still being able to put together such a quality tournament, really speaks to the level of our program and makes these teams want to come back each year."

Despite such a daunting field, the Scots placed more wrestlers this year than ever before. "This is a tough tournament for us with all the Division-I competition ... we wrestled some tough wrestlers and some tough schools."

Alma had one champion on the day, as So. Trevor Maresh (Northville/Northville) claimed the 197 crown with a sudden victory decision over Michael Pawlitz from Ohio Northern.

"Trevor is our highlight of the day ... he had a huge win," Hibbs commented. "To go out and defeat somebody like Pawlitz from Northern is major for Trevor ... he really turned the corner today with his performance."

So. Shawn Brewer (New Boston/Huron) had his best showing as a Scot on Saturday, advancing to his first collegiate tournament final at 157. Jr. Tyler Foley (New Hudson/South Lyon East) advanced to the final match at 125 before falling by pin to claim second in a class featuring three Division-I athletes.

Next up for the Scots is a trip to Wheaton College to participate in the Pete Wilson Invitational on Friday, Jan. 31 at 11:00 AM
