The Alma College wrestling team traveled to Olivet College for a dual meet on Friday evening. The Scots were unable to repeat last year's upset of the Comets, falling 28-10 to the No. 9 team in the nation.
"Tonight Olivet flexed their muscle at home, I congratulate the team and coach Brissette, they did a fantastic job tonight," said Alma Head Coach Todd Hibbs.
Alma struggled on the mats at the Cutler Event Center Friday, claiming just three out of ten matches against the Comets.
"We lost a lot of matches in the final seconds of periods and just did not close out things."
In front of a strong contingent of Alma fans, who made the trip on a fan bus, the Scots showed strong will throughout the match and hung with No.9 Olivet despite the Comets boasting three wrestlers ranked in the top 10 nationally.
"I am so happy with our fan support, the students who came down and the parents who showed up ... Olivet noticed, our fans came out in full force tonight and supported us and I would really like to thank them."
So. Shawn Brewer (New Boston/Huron) defeated Jacob Gould 11-6 at 157 and classmate Trevor Maresh (Northville/Northville) claimed the victory at 185, defeating Trevor Timmreck 4-1.
Sr. Matt Tuttle (Reading/Reading), who is currently ranked sixth in nation, continued his reign of dominance on Friday, defeating Dan Fleet 10-1 at 165. Heading into Friday's match, Tuttle ranked fourth in Division III in fall victories with 11.
The Scots return home for the Alma Open on Saturday, Jan. 25, with the first match set to start at 8:45 a.m.
