Saturday saw the Alma College wrestling team travel east to take part in the Brockport (NY) Invitational. The Scots finished third out of five teams with 119 points and behind first place Roger Williams (126 points) and host Brockport (125 points). Behind the Scots were John Hopkins University (109.5 points) and Army (75 points).
"It was real close going into the finals, but we lost all three championship finals bouts," said Alma Head Coach Todd Hibbs. "We didn't wrestle particularily well today but I kind of expected that to be the case. We have only been back for four or five days and our training has been geared to our match next Friday at Olivet and then our tournament the following weekend."
Although it wasn't Alma's best match of the season thus far, the Scots still had some very good outcomes and wrestlers that competed very well. Alma had three grapplers finish as runners ups - Jr. Zac Case (Battle Creek/Pennfield) at 133, Jr. Casimer Strzynski (Ludington/Ludington) at 141 and Jr. Jared Groenveld (Allendale/Allendale) at 184.
In addition, the Scots had three competitors take home third place honors on the day - Sr. Matt Tuttle (Reading/Reading) at 165, So. Jamie Jakes (Dearborn/Divine Child) at 174 and So. Trevor Maresh (Northville/Northville) at 197.
The Scots will compete next in their big, natural rivalry with Olivet College on Friday evening. Start time of the match has been moved to 7:30 and will take place after a big high school tilt between Richmond and Lowell that starts at 5:00 p.m.
The wrestling team is providing a fan bus that will leave the Alma campus and head down to Olivet for the match. For more information, contact Head Coach Todd Hibbs at (989) 463-7279 or via email at hibbstw@alma.edu
