Box Score The Alma College Men's Basketball team hosted Adrian College on Saturday afternoon for Senior Day 2013 at Art Smith Arena in a contest that had playoff implications. The Bulldogs defeated the Scots 70-65 in a hard-fought game by both sides. With the loss, Alma is now 3-9 in the MIAA and 8-15 overall, while Adrian improved to 6-6 in the league and 17-6 in 2012-13.
With the loss, Alma's hopes for the postseason tournament were dashed.
The Scots honored five seniors who were playing their last home game for the school - G/F Dustin DeShais (Ortonville, Mich./Brandon), F Brian Sheridan (New Lothrop, Mich./New Lothrop), F Greg Silverthorn (Shepherd, Mich./Shepherd), G Caleb VanTimmeren (Coopersville, Mich./Coopersville) and G Chris Williamson (Fowlerville, Mich./Fowlerville). All seniors, with the exception of the injured Sheridan, were in the starting lineup for the home team.
"We gave a good effort today and we knew with the pink game and being our senior day we would come out with great energy," said Scots Head Coach Sam Hargraves. "We were a little stagnant defensively for a stretch before halftime and that hurt. We battled in the second half and just couldn't knock down the good looks we had towards the end and Adran did."
The Scots jumped out quick in the first half and had a 14-7 lead at the 12:57 mark after a lay-up by Jr. G Kyle Aho (Gwinn, Mich./Gwinn). Alma's biggest lead was 10 which they had twice, the final time being 27-17 after two free throws by Jr. G Brandon Krause (Sanford, Mich./Meridian) with 6:06 remaining in the half.
Adrian would fight back and take their first and only lead of the frame at 1:31 on a lay-up that gave the visitors a 28-27 lead. However, Alma would score the final four points of the half and go into halftime leading 31-28.
The Scots maintained their lead through most of the second half, still leading by six at 58-52 on an Aho free throw with 6:54 left in the game. But, the Bulldogs whittled away at their deficit and took a 62-61 advantage on a lay-up at the 3:24 mark. Alma had one more lead in the game 30 seconds later on a Krause jumper.
But, this was to be the visitor's day in the end as Adrian scored the next six points and never looked back. Despite some good looks at the basket that would not go in, Alma fought to the end. However, the Bulldogs prevailed as they walked off the court with the 70-65 victory.
Alma had five players that scored in double digits - DeShais (13), Jr. F Jake Murawske (Harbor Beach, Mich./Harbor Beach) with 10, Jr. F Isiah Law (Grand Haven, Mich./Grand Haven) with 10, Krause (10) and Aho (10). Aho led the team with nine rebounds and Silverthorn and Law each had three steals defensively.
The Scots next play on Wednesday evening when they travel to Albion to take on the Britons. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
