Scots Grapplers go 3-0 on Saturday in Ft. Myers, Florida

On Saturday, the Alma College wrestling team enjoyed the warm southwest Florida sunshine outside and took care of some serious business inside at the 3rd Annual Florida Gulf Coast Duals in Ft. Myers.

The Scots went 3-0 on the day against some very significant opposition and left everyone in attendance impressed with the quality that Alma has on the roster.

The student-athletes from mid-Michigan defeated Augustana College (IL) 20-19, Central College (IA) 30-15 and North Central College (IL) 33-10 to finish undefeated on the day.

"Today was our best dual event in the three years of our program," said Alma Head Coach Todd Hibbs. "We went 3-0 and undefeated against three very good and very well coached teams. They are always top programs in the country and last year two of them beat us in this event. To beat all three is just outstanding."

Sr. Matt Tuttle (Reading/Reading) improved to 17-0 on the season with three victories at 165 that included two falls - increasing his total to 14 in 2013-14. So. Jamie Jakes (Dearborn/Divine Child) had a good day, going 3-0, including a victory over Augustana's Jordan Richardson, ranked as an honorable mention performer at 174. Additionally, So. Trevor Maresh (Northville/Northville) recorded two victories at 197 for the Scots.

Hibbs called the Foley brothers the wrestlers of the day for their performances on Saturday. Fr. Ryan Foley (New Hudson/Brighton), forced into action at 141, had two victories by pin, while Jr. Tyler Foley (New Hudson/South Lyon East) had three victories by decision at 125 against three very good opponents.

"We knew going into today that Tyler was going to see three of the best wrestlers he would face all season," remarked Hibbs. "He defeated all three, including #4 Dan Page of Central, and proved that he can wrestle with the top six guys in the country."

The Scots are now off until January 11, when they participate in the Brockport (NY) Invitational.
