Saturday morning brought the dawn of the 2nd Annual Alma College Open for the Scots' wrestling program and it was considered a success by all involved. Over 170 grapplers participated and competitive wrestling was the norm all day long.
"As a tournament, we had a very efficient day and received many compliments for how it was run and for our facilities," said Scots Head Coach Todd Hibbs. As a team, we had a rough day because of an illness that has been sweeping through the team. However, we still had some individual successes that we can celebrate.
"The Open grew this year and it will continue to grow as the interest increases. It is very rewarding to throw an event that so many people enjoyed and it is great to showcase our Alma College campus."
Freshman Adam Robinson (Mason, Mich./Mason) continued his very impressive first campaign as he took first place at 285 as he defeated Mike Murray of Central Michigan. Robinson has now participated in four championships this season and has been victorious in three of them for the Scots.
In addition, Freshman Trevor Maresh (Northville, Mich./Northville), also having a very good first year, finished third at 197 for the hosts. Freshman Shawn Brewer (New Boston, Mich./Huron) placed fourth at 157.
The team participated in today's open without seven wrestlers out with illness and pulled three additional competitors out after their first match due to health concerns.
Up next for Alma is the Wheaton College (Ill.) Invitational next Friday and Saturday in Illinois.
