Alma Women's Basketball loses at #2 Calvin College 77-55 on Saturday afternoon

Box Score

On Saturday afternoon, the Alma College Women's basketball team traveled to Grand Rapids to take on #2 ranked Calvin College in an MIAA contest. The Knights defeated the visiting Scots by a score of 77-55 to improve to 17-1 overall and 10-0 in the league, while Alma is now 6-12 in 2012-13 and 5-5 in the MIAA.

"Today was a very good measuring stick for us as t where we are playing wise," said Alma Head Coach Keisha Brown. "We are peaking at the right time. Today's score does not reflect how hard and well we played. I am pleased with what I saw today and am excited with where we are going into next week."

Both teams got off to a relatively slow start and after Alma So. G Mallory Pruett (Ishpeming, Mich./Ishpeming) hit a free throw, Calvin led 8-5 at the 16:19 mark. The Knights scored the next nine points and had a 17-5 advantage with 13:58 remaining in the half.

The Scots played very hard but Calvin was able to maintain their lead and led by as many as 17 points at 33-16 with 4:46 left in the frame. The Scots cut the deficit to 35-25 when Pruett scored on a tip-in two minutes later, but the Knights held tight and went into the break leading 37-25.

Pruett connected on a three-pointer six seconds into the second half to cut the Calvin lead to nine but that is the closest the visitors would be able to come the rest of the game. The Knights went on a 21-6 run at that point and extended their advantage to 58-34 at the 10:08 mark.

The Knights are so highly ranked for a reason and even though the Scots scratched and clawed throughout the game, the Knights would just not let Alma back into the game. As a result, the home team walked off the court with the 77-55 victory.

The leading scorer for the Scots was Pruett who finished with 12 points, while Sr. F Danielle Hicks (Marshall, Mich./Marshall) had nine. Hicks also added a team-high four steals and added four rebounds. Fr. F Raeanna Zink (Birch Run, Mich./Frankenmuth) contributed a team-best six rebounds in the loss.

The Scots travel to Olivet on Wednesday evening to take on the Comets with tip-off scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
