Box Score The Alma College Men's Hoops team hosted Kalamazoo College on Wednesday evening in a key MIAA match-up at Art Smith Arena and defeated the Hornets by a score of 92-66. Alma now has an overall record of 8-10 and 3-4 in the league, while the Hornets dropped to 5-13 in 2012-13 and 2-5 in the MIAA.
"Things really clicked for us tonight and I thought we matched up well against them size wise and that helped," said Scots Head Coach Sam Hargraves. "The main factor tonight though, and it has been the last three games, was our defensive energy. We will only go as far as our energy and defense takes us."
Both teams came out inspired as Kalamazoo maintained a small lead for the first five plus minutes and the the game was tied at 11-11 at the 14:46 mark of the half. The Scots then scored six points in less than a minute for a 17-11 advantage and would not trail again in the game. Alma would extend that margin to 31-18 on a jumper by Jr. F Isiah Law (Grand Haven, Mich./Grand Haven) at 7:25.
The Hornets would narrow their deficit to seven on two occasions, the last being at the 3:05 mark on a basket that made it 34-27. Alma would outscore Kalamazoo 10-2 the rest of the way and took their biggest lead into the break when Jr. G Kyle Aho (Gwinn, Mich./Gwinn) put in a lay-up at the buzzer for a 44-29 advantage.
Both teams shot well in the first frame but the home team was especially warm from the floor as they shot 61% (17 of 28), including three of six from beyond the arc. The Scots also knocked down all seven of their free throw attempts.
The game was never in doubt in the second half as the Scots took control. With the score 47-33 at 18:38, Alma went on a 17-4 run and led 64-37 after a lay-up by Jr. F Jake Murawske (Harbor Beach, Mich./Harbor Beach) with 11:53 remaining.
The Scots led by 30 or more several times over the course of the rest of the game and maintained their largest lead at 84-50 after a Fr. G DJ Beckman (Shelby, Mich./Shelby) lay-up at the 6:22 mark. Alma would eventually walk off the court with the final 92-66 margin of victory.
Alma finished with four players in double figures on the evening - Aho was the high with 16, Jr. G Brandon Krause (Sanford, Mich./Meridian) had 13, Sr. G Dustin DeShais (Ortonville, Mich./Brandon) added 12, while Law had 11. Murawske led a balanced attack on the boards with six rebounds, while Sr. G Chris Williamson (Fowlerville, Mich./Fowlerville) paced the team with four assists.
Alma returns to action on Saturday night when they host Hope College at Art Smith Arena. Tip-off for the MIAA tilt is scheduled for 8:00 p.m.
