On Saturday afternoon, the Alma College Men's Basketball team made the trek to Grand Rapids to take on Calvin College in a league matchup. The host Knights weren't very friendly as they came away with a 86-63 win over the visiting Scots to improve to 4-0 in the MIAA and 13-2 overall. Alma is now 1-3 in the league and 6-9 in 2012-13.

"We were totally outclassed today and they dictated everything about this game," remarked Alma Head Coach Sam Hargraves. "We have two different types of teams and we knew it was going to be a battle of wills. They imposed theirs on us all game and give credit to them. But, when we don't compete defensively, we are not very good.

"Plus, when we have an off day shooting, that is a combination we won't overcome, especially against a team like Calvin."

Alma led the Knights 5-2 after two free throws by Jr. G Brandon Krause (Sanford, Mich./Meridian) at the 17:52 mark of the first half, but that was pretty much the extent of the joy for the visitors. Over the next 6:44, Calvin went on a 21-4 run and had a 23-9 advantage that would really never be threatened. The Knights held the Scots at bay the rest of the half and went into halftime with a 42-24 lead.

The second half did not get any better for Alma and even though they showed no quit, poor shooting and a hot Calvin team was too much to overcome. The Knights led 70-36 at the 9:19 mark and cruised the rest of the way en route to the 86-63 win over the Scots.

Krause led the Scots with 14 points and added six rebounds and four assists, while Fr. G DJ Beckman (Shelby, Mich./Shelby) had 13 points and three steals. Jr. F Isiah Law (Grand Haven, Mich./Grand Haven) contributed nine points while adding four assists and four rebounds.

The Scots continue their season next Wednesday evening when they travel to Adrian College to take on the Bulldogs in a key league game. Tip-off is scheduled for 8:00 p.m.
