Scots Women's Basketball team beats host Saint Mary's 67-61 on Saturday afternoon

Box Score

On Saturday afternoon, the Scots Women's Basketball team continued MIAA action when they traveled to play Saint Mary's and the visitors came away with a 67-61 win. With the victory, Alma is now 2-1 in the MIAA and 2-4 overall, while the Belles fell to 1-3 in the league and 3-6 on the 2012-13 campaign.

"Today we played two halves of basketball as we came out strong in the first half and maintained," remarked Alma Head Coach Keisha Brown. "However, in the second half they made a run but our kids never put their heads down and maintained their composure and continued to attack. Today is a good win for us because Saint Mary's is a good team.

"We had some big performances today from several people and that was a big difference for us as we didn't just have one or two people score. This win has going into exam week with some confidence. We are going to take the next two days off and allow our kids to rest physically and mentally to prepare for exams."

There were nine ties in a very closely played and at times sloppy first half. But after So. G Mallory Pruett (Ishpeming, Mich./Ishpeming) connected on a three-pointer with 1:50 remaining in the frame for a 28-27 advantage, the Scots rode that to a 33-27 halftime lead.

The Scots came out strong in the second half and increased their lead to 52-41 on a Fr. F Logan Rowell (Cass City, Mich./Cass City) free throw with 10:01 left in the game. The Belles had some fight in them however and went on a 17-5 run over the next seven minutes and took a 58-57 lead with 3:23 left.

But, after Jr. F Bailey Gooding (Gaylord, Mich./Gaylord) hit a jump shot to give the Scots a 61-60 advantage at the 1:49 mark, the visitors settled in defensively. The result was Alma walking off the court with a hard-fought 67-61 victory against the Belles.

Alma had four players score in double digits, including two with career highs - Pruett with 19 and Sr. G Stephanie Faller (Saginaw, Mich./Valley Lutheran) with 10.

Other players included Jr. F Mary Schlicher (Lewiston, Mich./Johannesburg-Lewiston) who a double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds and Gooding, who finished with 10 points. Sr. Danielle Hicks (Marshall, Mich./Marshall) contributed 12 rebounds and team-highs with five assists and five steals.

The Scots have exam week off from games and will next play on Saturday, December 15, when they host Albion College in a MIAA tilt. Tip-off is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
