Box Score On Saturday afternoon, the Alma College Women's Basketball team hosted Kalamazoo College in an MIAA contest at Art Smith Arena. The Scots defeated the Hornets by a score of 59-46 to improve their league record to 2-3 and 4-10 overall, while the Hornets are now 1-4 in the MIAA and 2-11 for the 2011-12 season.
"Coming off of Wednesday's loss to Albion, the girls were hungry as they felt they let one get away from them," said Alma Head Coach Keisha Brown. "Although it was an ugly win, they weren't going to let this one slip away. I like the direction we are headed going into next week."
It was a very competitive game throughout and the first half saw the score tied three times although Alma was able to walk off the court with a 31-24 advantage at the halfway point. The Scots had their biggest leads at eight points, the last being when Fr. F Grace Wheeler (St. Ignace, Mich./LaSalle) hit a lay-up with 1:19 remaining.
In the second half, the Hornets did not let up and made it clear that they were going to stick around for the long haul. They took a lead at 39-38 on a three-point play with 12:27 remaining, but the Scots would lead the rest of the way after Jr. G Danielle Hicks (Marshall, Mich./Marshall) hit a jumper for the 40-39 lead.
The Scots would extend the lead and eventually come away with the 59-46 victory. So. F Bailey Gooding (Gaylord, Mich./Gaylord) led the team with 12 points on the afternoon, while Wheeler was next with 11 points. Hicks had eight points, three steals and added eight rebounds, while So. F Sarah Stinson (Waterford, Mich./Kettering) had eight boards and five points.
The Scots will next play at Calvin College on Wednesday evening beginning at 6:00 p.m.
