Box Score On Saturday, the Alma College Women's Basketball team traveled to Indiana to take on Trine University in a league contest. The host Thunder ruined the visit by defeating the Scots by a score of 70-54 to improve their record to 9-7 overall and 3-4 in the MIAA, while Alma is now 2-5 in the league and 4-12 for the season.
Trine never trailed in the game as a 2-2 tie, the Thunder scored the next four points and would never lose that advantage. But, the Scots fought hard all half, cutting the deficit to one point on three different occasions. Alma closed the gap to 12-11 at 13:26 on a three-pointer by Sr. Rachel Jaksa (Mt. Pleasant, Mich./Sacred Heart). It was close from there and the Scots' Sr. G Jessica DeBruin (Muskegon, Mich./Mona Shores) hit a three with 12 seconds left to cut the deficit to 29-27 at the break.
However, the Thunder broke the game open at the beginning of the second half by scoring the first 11 points and taking a 40-27 advantage at 17:23. The Scots kept fighting and cut the lead to six points at 45-39 on a jumper by So. F Bailey Gooding (Gaylord, Mich./Gaylord) with 11:03 left in the game.
But, that is as close as the visitors would come on this day, as the Thunder was a determined team and were able to methodically increase their lead. Eventually, the Thunder walked off the court with the 70-54 league victory.
Jaksa led the Scots in scoring with 15 on five three-pointers, while Fr. F Morgan Henry (Wayland, Mich./Wayland Union) added eight. Jr. G Danielle Hicks (Marshall, Mich./Marshall) paced the team with 12 rebounds. For the game, the team shot 42%, including eight of 21 from beyond the arc.
The Scots next play on Wednesday evening when they host MIAA foe Olivet College. Tip-off at Art Smith Arena is set for 6:00 p.m.
