Scots Women's Basketball concludes season with home win over Olivet 61-57

The Alma Women's Basketball team concluded their 2010-11 season on Saturday afternoon with a dramatic win over Olivet College by a score of 61-57. Despite allowing the Comets to come back from a 20-point deficit, Alma hung on the for victory.

They finished the campaign with a 3-22 overall record and 2-14 in the MIAA, but the Scots finished the season by winning two of their last three games.

Saturday was Senior Day, as the Scots honored Sr. F Sydney Beckwith (Weidman, MI/Beal City). However, the day was dampened when she went down with a leg injury just nine minutes into the game. Beckwith did manage to score eight points in her time in the game, but she did not return on this afternoon.

Alma came out strong, pressuring the Comets into turnovers that resulted in the Scots opening up an 8-0 advantage three minutes into the game. The Scots increased their lead to 20, the biggest of the game, when So. G Danielle Hicks (Marshall, MI/Marshall) hit free throws to give the team a 32-12 lead with 5:26 remaining in the first half.

Olivet went on a bit of a roll the remainder of the half, cutting the lead to 10 at 36-26 before Alma's Jr. G Jessica DeBruin (Muskegon, MI/Mona Shores) hit a jumper for a 38-26 lead at halftime.

The Scots maintained a solid lead for most of the second half until Olivet went on a 19-3 run, tying the game at 54-54 with 1:53 left. But, Alma persevered in the end and walked off the court with the 61-57 victory.

Fr. G Anna Mattson (Brighton, MI/Brighton) led all Alma scorers with 14 points, and added six rebounds, while Hicks finished the game with nine points, eight rebounds and a team-high five assists. Fr. F Bailey Gooding (Gaylord, MI/Gaylord) contributed ten points, six boards and a game-high seven blocked shots.
