Alma's Women's Basketball team, fresh off a big win at home on Saturday against Adrian, was looking for more on Wednesday as they traveled to Calvin College on Wednesday. However, the Knights had different thoughts as they defeated the Scots by a margin of 74-48.
"We did not have the energy tonight that we had on Saturday, and that cost us big time in the game," said Alma Head Coach Keisha Brown. "We have gotten in early holes all year and we did again tonight. Carissa Verkaik is a very good player and we could not stop her. As always, Sydney Beckwith did her best and we just need other kids to step up and help, but we will come back and redeem ourselves on Saturday."
Calvin jumped out to a 10-0 lead, and never looked back and they led by as much as 25 points in the first half, as they took a 42-17 advantage into halftime. The Scots fought hard in the second half, but could not make up the difference and ultimately fell to the host Knights.
Beckwith (Weidman, MI/Beal City) led the Scots with 15 points, while So. G Danielle Hicks (Marshall, MI/Marshall) finished with nine points and 10 rebounds. Fr. G Bailey Gooding (Gaylord, MI/Gaylord) and Fr. G Brittany Deerfield (Gaylord, MI/Gaylord) each had seven points on the night.
Alma concludes their 2010-11 season on Saturday afternoon, when they host Olivet College at Art Smith Arena. Tip-off is set for 3:00 p.m.
