Box Score

After enduring some very tough losses this season, the Scots Women's Basketball team finally had an afternoon where almost all the pieces fell into place. Alma defeated Adrian College by a score of 65-44, notching their first league win of the season.

"It was very nice to walk into our locker room and see smiling faces looking back at me," said Alma Head Coach Keisha Brown. "We pulled it together for 40 minutes today and did not have to fight back from a big early hole. We know that we are not making the MIAA tournament, but we believe we can finish this season off respectively, and we did that today."

The game got off to a sluggish start, as both teams missed on scoring opportunities in the early minutes. But, Alma scored the first bucket of the game at 16:36, when So. G Danielle Hicks (Marshall, MI/Marshall) hit a lay-up. The Bulldogs led 7-6 four minutes later, until Fr. G Anna Mattson (Brighton, MI/Brighton) hit two free throws.

Her shots began Alma on an 18-0 run that gave the Scots a 24-7 advantage with 5:34 left in the half, and the home team never looked back. The Scots increased the lead to 32-9, when Fr. G Bailey Gooding (Gaylord, MI/Gaylord) dropped in a lay-up at 2:28, and as they went into halftime with a decisive 35-14 advantage.

In the second half, the young Alma squad believed and clicked, determined not to lose the lead they had worked so hard to achieve in the first 20 minutes. The Bulldogs had no quit in them and cut into the lead twice during the early stages of the second half.

But the Scots had an answer every time, and had their biggest lead of the game at 31, when Fr. C Payton Lupu (Onaway, MI/Onaway) hit a lay-up for a 61-30 advantage with 5:02 left in the game. Alma took care of business and finished out the final 65-44 victory, earning their first MIAA win of the season.

Sr. Sydney Beckwith (Weidman, MI/Beal City) led the Scots in scoring with 15 points, and also added three blocked shots and three assists. Fr. F Sarah Stinson (Waterford, MI/Ketterin) and Fr. G Brittany Deerfield (Gaylord, MI/Gaylord) finished the game with 13 and 10 points respectively in spearheading the win.

The Scots will play at Calvin on Wednesday evening before ending the 2010-11 campaign at home against Olivet on Saturday afternoon, beginning at 3:00 p.m.
