Box Score On Thursday afternoon, the Alma Women's Basketball team, after a nice holiday break, traveled to DePauw University (Ind.). The Scots were defeated by a score of 75-50, and now have a mark of 3-8 in 2011-12, while the #9 Tigers are now 9-1 overall on the season.
The Scots continued their very tough non-league schedule in taking on the Tigers and after a early 2-2 tie, the home team jumped out to a 9-2 advantage 3:30 into the game and never looked back. DePauw extended their lead to 20 points at 26-6 at the 6:56 mark of the half and led at halftime by a mark of 43-21.
"We did not have a good first half and when you get down 20 points to the #9 team in the country and they are knocking down shots, it is very hard to get out of that hole," said Alma Head Coach Keisha Brown. "Although we did some good things in the second half, we need to have two good halves and we didn't."
The second half was more of the same for the visitors as DePauw started the frame on a 9-1 run and ultimately built a 30-point lead. The advantage was too much for the Scots to overcome and the impressive Tigers were able to walk off the court with the 75-50 victory.
The Scots shot 37% for the game (18 of 49, two of 15 from beyond the arc), while DePauw finished at 46% by making 25 of 54 shots, including 10 of 21 three pointers. The Tigers held a commanding lead in rebounds, finishing with a 40-22 advantage.
So. G Brittney Deerfield (Gaylord, Mich./Gaylord) led the Scots with 10 points, while Sr. G Jessica DeBruin (Muskegon, Mich./Mona Shores) finished with nine points. Jr. G Danielle Hicks (Marshall, Mich./Marshall) paced Alma with four rebounds, while So. F Bailey Gooding (Gaylord, Mich./Gaylord) had six points and three steals in 13 minutes of action.
The schedule does not get any easier for the Scots, as they will next play #15 Franklin College (Ind.) on Friday afternoon. Tip-off is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
