The Alma Women's Basketball team hit the road for the first-round of the 2009 playoffs on Tuesday evening, when they played at Calvin College. The Scots' season ended on this night when Calvin defeated them by a score of 69-41, leaving the Scots at 9-16 on the year.
The two teams traded baskets for the first five minutes of the first half, but Alma had their biggest lead at 10-6, after Jr. G Lauren Hasler (Mt. Pleasant, MI/Sacred Heart) hit a three-pointer at the 15:49 mark. After Alma tied the score at 12-12, 1:30 later, Calvin went on a 32-8 run and led 44-20 at halftime, basically sealing the Scots' fate.
The second half was played at an even level for the most part, as Calvin outscored Alma by a margin of 25-21. They closed out the 69-41 victory to move on to the league's semi-finals and will now play St. Mary's College on Thursday evening.
Alma shot just 28% from the field on Tuesday (16 of 58), including two of 14 from beyond the arc, while Calvin shot 39% for the game, going 22 of 66 and seven of 25 from three-point land. The Scots were outrebounded by the Knights by a margin of 47-38.
Individually, Jr. F Meagan Hoblet (Cadillac, MI/Cadillac) led the team in scoring with 13 points and added eight rebounds, while Jr. G Lacey Best-Rowden (Lansing, MI/Waverly) added 11 points and a team-high five assists. Jr. F Kathryn Bigelow (Alma, MI/Alma) led the Scots with nine rebounds.
