ALMA WOMEN'S BASKETBALL DEFEATS CALVIN COLLEGE 58-54 ON SATURDAY

On Saturday, the Alma Women's basketball team had its first home game of the 2008-09 season and came away with a 58-54 overtime victory over MIAA rival Calvin College. The win, played at Cappaert Gymnasium in Alma,  improved the Scots to 2-1 in league action and 3-7 overall, while the Knights fell to 1-3 in the MIAA and 6-5 on the year. 


F Meagan Hoblet (Jr., Cadillac, MI/Cadillac) led the Scots with 18 points and added ten rebounds, while F Kathryn Bigelow (Jr., Alma, MI/Alma) had a school-record seven blocked shots (old record was five, achieved four times, last being Erica Philip vs. Albion on 1/4/05). Bigelow also notched four assists, ten points and a team-high 12 rebounds, while G Lacey Best-Rowden (Jr., Lansing, MI/Waverly) contributed a team-high seven assists on the afternoon.

As a team, Alma limited Calvin to a 25% shooting percentage from the field and forced 18 turnovers. The Scots had 13 steals in the game, led by F Sydney Beckwith (So., Weidman, MI/Beal City), G Heather Keenan (Sr., Charlotte, MI/Charlotte) and G Stephanie Bradshaw (Jr., Livonia, MI/Churchill) with three apiece.

The Scots led 25-21 after one half after shooting nearly 40% from the field, while the second half was a back and forth affair. Alma had a four point lead (45-41) with less than two minutes remaining, but he Knights fought back and scored the final two baskets of regualtion, forcing the 45-45 game to overtime.

Alma used balanced scoring and some clutch free throws in the overtime period to outscore Calvin 13-9 and come away with the four-point league victory.

The Scots will next play on Wednesday, when the they host league opponent Olivet College at Cappaert Gymnasium. Start time for the game is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
