The Alma College Women's Basketball team hit the road on Wednesday evening and dropped a 51-26 decision to Albion College. The Scots continue its season on Saturday afternoon, when they host Rochester College, in a non-conference tilt at Cappaert Gymnasium. Wednesday's defeat dropped Alma to 3-5 in league play and 4-11 overall, while the Britons won their fiftth consecutive game to improve to 5-3 in the MIAA and 10-6 in the 2008-09 season.
The Scots shot a dismal 17% for the game and struggled from the start, trailing 30-12 at the end of the half. The Britons hit on 44% of its shots in the initial frame, including five three-pointers, as they established control quickly and used a smothering defense to keep Alma at bay.
The second half was a bit better for the road team, but Albion was still able to outscore the Scots by a margin of 21-14 in the final 20 minutes. Alma's defense was very stingy as the Britons shot just 26% in the last frame. However, offensively, the Scots struggles continued as they hit on just five of 29 attempts from the field.
Jr. F Meagan Hoblet (Cadillac, MI/Cadillac) led the Scots with 11 points and a team-high six rebounds, while Jr. F Kathryn Bigelow (Alma, MI/Alma), So. G Stephanie Bradshaw (Livonia, MI/Livonia) and So. F Sydney Beckwith (Weidman, MI/Beal City) each added five rebounds.
Jr. G Lacey Best-Rowden (Lansing, MI/Waverly) led the team with three assists and Bigelow had three blocked shots for the Scots. The Alma defense forced 19 Albion turnovers and had eight steals to show for it, led by Hoblet, Beckwith and Sr. G Heather Keenan (Charlotte, MI/Charlotte), each with two apiece.
