SCOTS WOMEN'S BASKETBALL FALLS TO ADRIAN 57-50 ON WEDNESDAY

The Alma College Women's Basketball team continued its 2008-09 season on Wednesday with a league tilt at Adrian College, but came away with a 57-50 defeat at the hands of the rival Bulldogs. The Scots fell to 3-3 in the MIAA and 4-9 overall, while Adrian now stands at 4-2 in the league and 11-3 on the season.

After the Scots'F Kathryn Bigelow (Jr., Alma, MI/Alma) scored the first bucket of the game, the Bulldogs went on a 14-0 run before Alma made the score 14-4 eight minutes into the half. The early deficit proved to be too much for the Scots although they hung tough. The Scots cut the lead to five at one point and six at 24-18 with 2:46 remaining in a half that saw the Bulldogs go to the locker room with a 28-20 advantage.

Alma scored the first basket of the second half, but Adrian scored the next six points for a 36-22 advantage with 15:53 left in the game. The Bulldogs extended their lead to 17 points just a minute later, but Alma was tenacious defensively and slowly cut into the lead. Trailing 50-39 with 5:40 remaining, the Scots proceeded to go on a 7-0 run over the next two minutes to cut the Bulldog lead to 50-46 when F Meagan Hoblet (Jr., Cadillac, MI/Cadillac) hit a jumper. However, Alma could not get any closer and Adrian was able to hold on and claim the seven-point league win.

The Scots were led in scoring by Bigelow's 14 points and G Lacey Best-Rowden's (Jr., Lansing, MI/Waverly) 13, on six of seven shooting from the floor. Best-Rowden also led the way with six assists for Alma, while Hoblet finished with nine rebounds to pace the team. G Stephanie Bradshaw (So., Livonia, MI/Churchill) added eight boards and Bigelow contributed seven off the glass, even though the Scots were bested by the Bulldogs by a 40-38 rebound margin.

Alma continues MIAA play on Saturday when they host Trine University at Cappaert Gymnasium. Tip-off is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
