KALAMAZOO, Mich. - Cadillac freshman Megan Hoblet led the Scots to victory Saturday afternoon in a 56-47 win on the road against Kalamazoo. Hoblet dropped 25 points, a season/career high for the first-year player in just her second start of the season. Alma improved to 9-10 overall and 5-7 in the MIAA with the nine-point victory.
Hoblet added 13 rebounds in the first double-double of her career. It is the fifth double-digit scoring performance of the year with every one coming in 2007.
Junior Ashley Matuzak (Saginaw/Nouvel Catholic) added 12 points, playing a team-high 31 minutes.
The Scots held the Hornets to just 28 percent shooting from the floor.
Alma trailed by one point at halftime, 22-23 after tying things up twice throughout the course of the first half. The Scots came out of halftime and went ahead by one on a Hoblet jumper in the paint, but Kalamazoo continued to fire away, going up by six points four minutes into the second half.
Kathy Bigelow (Alma) dropped in a jumper and Ashley Matuzak drained a three, followed by another Matuzak layup generated from a Bigelow steal to go ahead by one.
The back and forth nature of the game continued until eight minutes remained and Hoblet and Bigelow drained back-to-back buckets to go up by five. The freshman tandem continued to turn it up down the stretch to give Alma a lead as large as 12 points as the game wound down, ultimately winning by a nine-point margin.
Alma returns to the hardwood Feb. 7 when it hosts Adrian at 6 p.m. in the first game of the men's/women's doubleheader.
