Alma, Mi.- The Alma Scots (1-0, 3-4) and the Kalamazoo Hornets (0-1, 2-3) faced off today in the conference opener for both teams and the Maroon and Cream came away with the win by the score of 70-58 despite several late rally attempts by the Hornets.
The Hornets were hot early but the Scots battled back and went in to halftime with a 29-19 lead, giving themselves enough cushion that even though they only outscored Kzoo by two points in the second half, were able to come home with the comfortable win against a tough conference foe.
Leading the way for the Scots was sophomore Meagan Hoblet (Cadillac/Cadillac) who led the team in both points and rebounds with 21 and eight respectively. Danielle Large (Diamondale/Eaton Rapids) gave the Scots the offensive production they have been needing from the perimeter, scoring 16 points and dishing out five assists, while senior Ashley Matuzak (Saginaw/Nouvel C.C.) and Heather Keenan (Charlotte/Charlotte) each posted solid numbers scoring 13 points and 10 points and adding 14 rebounds between the two of them.
The Scots come away from this game encouraged as they finally put up a good shooting percentage in the second half of a game, something they have struggled to do so far this season. Alma shot an amazing 58% in the second period, leading to a 41 point game clinching performance.
The Scots will have another week between games before traveling to Grand Rapids to take on the Calvin Knights for a 1:00 p.m. tip-off.
