Scots Stop Britons, Pick Up First MIAA Win of Season

ALMA, Mich. - The Scots picked up a big win with a 58-51 defeat of the Albion Britons this evening in Cappaert Gymnasium. The game marked the first at home for the Scots as they picked up the win, moving to 5-5 on the season and 1-2 in MIAA action. Meanwhile, Albion falls to 6-6, 1-3 in MIAA play.

Ashley Matuzak (Saginaw/Nouvel) led the way for the Scots, scoring 19 points to go along with 12 boards for her third double-double of the season and her sixth-consecutive double-digit scoring performance. In a balanced, team effort Courtney Lusk (Michigan Center) added 13 points, two blocks and two assists while Abby Way (Fowlerville) scored 10 points, adding four assists.

As a team, the Scots held the Brits to just 33 percent from the field and a 29 percent mark from three-point range. Alma countered with a 43 percent mark from the field.

Briefly, midway through the second half, the Scots tried to give it away with back-to-back shot clock violations before Matuzak converted in the paint to get the Scots back on track and up by one with 10 minutes to go in the game. With just under 2:30 remaining in the game, Albion's Jessica Babcock nailed a three pointer to send the Brits up by one, but Alma rattled off seven unanswered points to close the game with a victory.

Alma returns to action Thursday when it travels to Angola, Ind., to face Tri-State and will play at home Saturday (Jan. 6) when the Scots host Kalamazoo at 3 p.m.
