Alma Wins By 10 In 2006-07 Debut

ALMA, Mich. - Alma women's basketball got off to a victorious start Friday with a 66-56 win against Anderson University in Anderson's own tip-off Classic.

The Scots, a young team entering the season, relied on the combined experience of Ashley Matuzak (Saginaw/Nouvel), Heather Keenan (Charlotte) and Abigail Way (Fowlerville).

Keenan led the Scots with 17 points and four steals to go with two assists and two turnovers while Matuzak added 16 points and eight boards along with three steals, assists and turnovers. Way chipped in with 15 points and six rebounds.

As a team, the Scots upheld tradition, going a perfect 12-for-12 from the charity stripe including 11 in the second half. As a team, the Maroon and Cream shot 41 percent to Anderson's 36 percent.

Alma held a six-point advantage at halftime, 27-21. They had as much as a 14-point advantage throughout the game, before Anderson battled back, leading by five points with 10 minutes remaining in the game. But the Scots played solid defense and hit every shot from the free throw line to give them a 10-point victory to open the season.

Alma College returns to action Saturday in the second game of the Anderson Tip-Off Classic.
