Scots Pick up First MIAA Victory Against Tri-State, 72-61

ALMA, Mich. - The Alma College women's basketball team imnproved to 6-5 (1-3 MIAA) with a 72-61 victory against MIAA foe Tri-State in Cappaert Gymnasium tonight.

Sophomore Ashley Matuzak (Saginaw/Nouvel Catholic) and senior Darcie Philp (Ubly) each dropped double-doubles on the night with Matuzak leading the team with 20 points and 10 rebounds in addition to three blocks while Philp added 12 points and 10 boards - all defensive. As a team, the Scots were perfect from the charity stripe, going 10-for-10 from the line.

Freshman Heather Keenan (St. Charles) dished out six assists to pace the Scots while Matuzak added four.

The Scots led by 10 points at halftime, 37-27, and never lost control of the lead throughout the game, leading by as many as 17 midway through the first half. Despite the absence of sophomore Erica Philp (Ubly) to injury for the game, the Maroon and Cream led through a total team effort.

Alma now looks ahead to another MIAA game Saturday when it travels to Kalamazoo for a 3 p.m. game against the Hornets.
