GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Joining other Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) teams at the annual WHAC vs MIAA Challenge hosted by Aquinas College on Friday, February 13th, the Alma College track and field teams looked to get some meaningful results as the MIAA Indoor Field Day approaches in the distance. The Scots again set a new school record along with many other positive performances.
Kicking off the performances for the night was Lauren Brawt who smashed her previous school record in the 600-meter run by two seconds, running a 1:40.30, which also was the 57th fastest time in NCAA Division III this season. Teammate Sophia Sanford placed right behind in third with her personal best time in the event with a 1:45.11, beating her previous best by over five seconds. Helena Snyder picked up a fifth-place finish in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 9.71, just off her best. In the 800-meter run, Stella Lampert scored a fifth-place finish with a time of 2:50.06. Moving to long distance and the 3000 meters, Sophia Dech found the podium with a third-place time of 11:12.05, for Alma's best finisher. Snyder also scored a second-place finish in the high jump competition with a mark of 1.62 meters, just behind first who tied her personal best.
Flipping to the men's competition, Onction Zape continued his success for his first collegiate season, adding another top five finish in the 60-meter prelims, finishing fourth with a time of 7.13. Zape would go on to finish sixth in finals with a time of 7.20 seconds. In the 60-meter hurdles, Trace Laskey secured a fourth-place finish with a time of 8.86 seconds, a personal best for the sophomore. Zape added another podium finish to his season in the 200 meters, running a time of 23.35, narrowly missing out on second by a hundredth of a second. Moving to more distance, Ethan Shroat was Alma's best finisher in the 3000-meter run with a time of 9:54.12, placing fifth in the field. The men's 4x400 meter relay team consisting of Benjamin Daniels, Laskey, Leland Edelyn and Brady Crake scored a second-place finish with a time of 3:44.58 to round out the men's top finishes.
Alma will now have one final tune up before competing at the MIAA Indoor Field Day at the end of February. The Scots will head to Saginaw Valley State University for a final time on February 20th. The meet is set to start at 2:30 PM.
