GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Alma College track and field team hit the road for a short bus ride to Grand Rapids, landing at the campus of Aquinas College for the WHAC vs MIAA Challenge, on Friday, January 31st. The Scots had a positive showing as they enter the bulk of their indoor season.
On the women's side of the meet,
Helena Snyder collected a third-place finish in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 10.03.
Jenna Belmas was just behind finishing fifth with a time of 10.57 seconds.
Olivia Giza collected her first top five finish as a Scot as she placed fourth in the 400-meter race with a time of 1:06.84.
Lauren Brawt also collected a fourth-place finish in the 600-meter race with a time of 1:42.97, which was a personal best over one second. Turning toward the distance side of the action
Jordan Fox and
Sophia Sanford, both finished second and third, respectively, in the 1000-meter run with times of 3:20.37 and 3:22.94, both of which were personal bests. In the 3000-meter run, Sophia Dech led the Scots with a second-place finish, running a time of 11:32.36, followed by
Erica Slocum finishing third with a time of 11:38.27. Snyder also competed in the women's high jump, where she came away in the top spot, clearing the mark of 1.57 meters. Brawt scored a fourth-place finish in the long jump with a mark of 5.09 meters. Brawt also had another fourth-place finish in the triple jump with a mark of 9.52 meters.
Lauren McCarthy nabbed a fifth-place finish in the pole vault with a mark of 2.86 meters.
For the men, Trace Laskey finished fourth in the 60-meter hurdles prelims with a time of 9.20 seconds. He then finished fourth again in the finals, improving his time to 9.05 seconds.
Phillip Banner ended up finishing third in the 200-meter race with his time of 24.20.
Will Maginity added another fourth-place finish for the Scots in the 400-meter race, clocking in at 53.96.
Aiden Aldrich competed for the first time in his collegiate career in the 800-meter run, finishing in second with a time of 2:02.55. In the field events,
Ed Markarian finished fifth-place in the long jump with a mark of 5.94 meters.
Leland Edelyn tapped in at fifth in the pole vault, clearing 3.50 meters, tying his personal best.
Nick Batista finished fifth in the men's shot put with a throw of 12.50 meters, a new personal best for him.
Ryan McGuire finished just outside the top five in the weight throw, reaching sixth with a personal best throw of 14.55 meters.
Alma will next be in action on Saturday, February 8th, as they will travel a short distance up the road again to Central Michigan University for the Chippewa Invitational. The meet is set to begin at 12:00 PM inside the Indoor Athletic Complex (IAC) on the Jack Skoog Track.
