GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Alma College track and field teams traveled west to the campus of Aquinas College in Grand Rapids on Friday, February 9th. The Scots competed in the annual WHAC vs MIAA Challenge between the NAIA conference and NCAA DIII conference. The Scots once again broke a school record, this time twice in one evening.
Helena Snyder added her name atop of the top ten list once again this season, this time in the 60-meter hurdles which was held by current senior Andrea Taghon. In the prelim race, Snyder ran a time of 9.72, which as .07 faster than the previous record of 9.79. Shortly after, Snyder lined up to race once again, this time in the finals and again topped the previous record. Snyder finished the finals race with a time of 9.65, the new current record. Snyder placed sixth in both heats with her times. Lauren Brawt collected a top ten finish in the 400-meter run as she clocked in with a time of 1:04.27, good enough for seventh place overall. Four Scots runners placed top ten in the 600 meters as Taghon placed third with a time of 1:51.71 to lead the pack. Jenna Belmas Victoria Hatton and Jordan Fox all finished seventh, eighth and ninth in the event, respectively. Sophia Sanford finished tenth in the 800 meters with a time of 2:41.12, Alma's top finisher in the event. In the 3000-meter run, Caleigh Winters finished in seventh place with a time of 11:50.79. In the field events, Snyder finished in fifth in the high jump with a mark of 1.49 meters. Mya Scott placed ninth in the pole vault with a vault of 2.77 along with Brawt and Allison Wichert each placing top ten in the long jump as well. Brawt's best jump was marked at 4.95 meters which placed her in third as Wichert jumped 4.62 and finished in sixth. Liathano Ramirez placed eighth in the weight throw with a mark of 13.13 meters, Alma highest finished in the event.
On the men's side of action, Devon Frenchko tabbed a third place finished in the 60-meter finals with a time of 7.07 in his first time running the event. Chandler Holloway and Blake Herr finished closely behind in fifth place and seventh place, respectively. Jordan Williams was the highest finisher for the Scots in the 200-meter run with a time of 23.57, just ahead of his teammates Holloway and Jordan Maxima who each placed eighth and tenth in the event. Landon Jennings recorded the fastest time of the day in the 400-meter run with a time of 52.50 to win the event. Will Maginity and Phillip Banner both finished top ten as well finishing in seventh and ninth. Noah Murhpy and Benjamin Dickieson both finished top five in the 1000-meter run as Murphy ran a time of 2:52.78 finishing third and Dickieson ran a time of 3:07.30 finishing in fifth. Jett Reimers placed seventh in the mile run with a time of 4:37.95 along with Braxton Lamey finishing in third in the 3000-meter run with a time 9:17.46. Leland Edelyn placed ninth in the 60-meter hurdles, running a time of 9.93. In the field events, Joseph Gonzales placed ninth in the high jump with a mark of 1.72 meters along with Jerrold Atwell finished ninth as well in the shot put with a throw of 12.86 meters.
The Scots will now have one more tune-up before the MIAA Indoor Field Day on Saturday, February 24th, which is hosted by Trine University.
