SAGINAW, Mich. – The Alma College track and field team opened their season on Friday, December 1st at the Saginaw Valley State University Holiday Classic. The Scots saw several promising performances to kick off the season as records were broken and individuals found themselves adding their names to the top ten lists.
Starting off in the men's 60-meter dash, Freshman Blake Herr kicked off his collegiate career with a bang as he ran a 7.17, which was good enough to place him in 18th overall in a field with Division I and Division II, including NAIA school's athletes as well. Herr's time was also a top ten record in the race as it was the fourth fastest time in school history in his first meet.
Freshman Jett Reimers also kicked off his indoor career with a solid start running a 2:04.63 in the men's 800 meter, placing him 11thin the field. Justin Kissling was just behind Reimers and finished 13th in the 800 with a time of 2:06.40. Joseph Gonzalez opened the season in the men's long jump with a jump of 5.60 meters which was good enough for 15th overall. Noah Murphy competed in the men's 3000 meter and was able to place 12th overall with a time of 9:44.02.
On the women's side, Lauren Brawt had a positive start to her collegiate indoor season, competing in the women's 400 meters placing 14th in the field with a time of 1:03.10. Brawt's time was good enough to place her in sixth all time in the Alma record books. Brawt also competed in the long jump and finished 13th overall, jumping 4.78 meters. Brawt's jump was good enough for the second farthest jump in school history, again placing herself in the record books early as a freshman.
Helena Snyder had the best showing for the Scots as she was able to set the school record in the pentathlon scoring 2,829 points, breaking the previous record of 2,544 previously held by Stephine Davis ('21) Snyder ran a time of 2:32.26 in her final event, the 800, which was also the seventh fastest time in school history. Allison Wichert also competed in the pentathlon and finished with 2,108 which places her in third all-time.
Alma will be back in action after the new year on Friday, January 12th, back at Saginaw Valley for the SVSU Classic. The meet is set to begin at 2:30 PM.
