Alma Falls in MIAA Semifinals

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Alma College volleyball team fell in straight sets (25-18, 25-14, 30-28) to Calvin University on Thursday in the MIAA Tournament semifinals. The Scots will play in the third place game against Albion College on Saturday while Calvin advances to the conference championship game on Saturday. 

Junior Sara Majerle had 20 kills and 11 digs in the game. Haley Novak posted a team-high 24 assists. Bailey Cantrell led the Scots with 13 digs. Ashlyn Michalski had four total blocks. 

Alma came ready to play as it took an early 7-2 lead in the opening set. The game remained close until Calvin went on a late run to take the first frame. 

In the second set, the Knights held the lead the whole way as they took a 2-0 lead in sets. 

The Scots did not go down without a fight. In the third set, Alma and Calvin went back-and-forth with the Scots taking a 17-13 advantage. The Knights swung it back their way as they took a 24-21 lead with three match points. Alma fought off all three points and tied the game at 24-all. The score reached 28-28 until Calvin scored back-to-back points to earn the set and match victory. 

McKenzie Smith recorded six kills while Kolbey Boyd added seven digs.
