Grand Rapids - The Alma College cross country teams competed at the Division III Great Lakes Regional Championship on Saturday (Nov. 16) where the men finished 21st and the women finished 25th. Due to course conditions, the women's course was shortened by roughly 400 meters and the men's race was shortened by roughly 500 meters.
"Our men's finish was the same place as last year," said Head Coach Matt Chovanec, "but it's now been two years in a row where it's been our best regional finish since 2003. Our women's 25th place finish is up three places from last year. We're very proud of this group and what they've accomplished! It's a great day to be a Scot!"
Senior Aubrey Hemstreet (Kalamazoo, Mich. / Portage Central High School) finished 66th overall among 233 women in the 6K, coming in at 23:02.9 (3:50/K). Freshman Cornelia Gotaas (Alma, Mich. / Alma) came up next for the Scots at 25:14.8 (4:12/K), good for 157th place. Blaire Showers (Ithaca, Mich. / Ithaca) followed at 25:32.2 (4:15/K), then Elizabeth Gotaas (Alma, Mich. / Alma) at 25:51.9 (4:19/K), then Stephanie Davis (Elmira, Mich. / Gaylord) at 26:15.1 (4:23/K) and Haley Trickey (Millington, Mich. / Millington) at 26:35.9 (4:26/K).
Senior Jack Montgomery (Mikado, Mich. / Oscoda Area) led the men with a time of 25:29.3 (3:11/K) and placing 62nd. Luke Reed (Benzonia, Mich. / Benzie Central) was 88th at 25:53.9 (3:14/K). Timmy Carlington (Cadillac, Mich. / Cadillac Senior High School) had a time of 26:37.8 (3:20/K), Karl Stroup (White Lake, Mich. / Lakeland) came in at 26:44.1 (3:21/K), Nolan Rowland (Battle Creek, Mich. / Richland-Gull Lake) finished in 27:23.0 (3.25/K) and Nathan Idalski (Gaylord, Mich. / Johannesburg-Lewiston) had a time of 27:35.4 (3:27/K).
