Cross Country Teams Place Third in Season-Opening Meet

Mount Pleasant, Mich. - The Alma College men's and women's cross country teams both finished third in the Central Michigan University Jeff Drenth Invitational on Friday (Aug. 30), the Scots' opening meet of the year.

The men finished with a score of 88 points and an average time of 16:39.34. The women had an average time of 21:11.44 and a total score of 94.

Luke Reed (Benzonia, Mich. / Benzie Central) posted Alma's fastest time on the men's side, coming in at 16:12.74. Jack Montgomery (Mikado, Mich. / Oscoda Area) finished next at 16:24.06. Karl Stroup (White Lake, Mich. / Lakeland), Sean Pauley (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Grand Rapids Catholic Central) and Timmy Carlington (Cadillac, Mich. / Cadillac Senior High School) all earned points for the Scots.

Aubrey Hemstreet (Kalamazoo, Mich. / Portage Central High School) placed 17th among all women, clocking in at 19:09.70, a new personal best. Cornelia Gotaas (Alma, Mich. / Alma), Blaire Showers (Ithaca, Mich. / Ithaca) and Haley Trickey (Millington, Mich. / Millington) finished 18th, 19th and 20th respectively. Freshman Madison O'Deay (Freeland, Mich. / Freeland High School) rounded out the point-scorers for the Scots.

"We coaches were very pleased with the performances today," said head coach Matt Chovanec. "It was very apparent that our runners put in the work this summer. The results can be deceptive when you look at where we placed individually, but our final times, as well as our gap times from our number one runner to our number five runner, are much better than at the same time last year. We are looking forward to seeing what the rest of the season brings, for sure."

Alma returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 7 at the Calvin Knight Invitational. The meet will begin at 10:00 a.m. at the Gainey Athletic Complex in Grand Rapids.
