Women's Cross Country ranked No. 6 in the Great Lakes Region

The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association has recognized Alma College's women's cross country team as a top contender in the Great Lakes Region for week 1 of the 2012 season. The women found themselves ranked sixth with two races under their belt.

"Most of us in the coaching arena understand that rankings do and yet do not have significant meaning," explained Head Coach, Gordie Aldrich. "They cannot directly transfer to any competitive situation but yet they can as they are a recognition of many hours of hard work and dedication which eventually makes for yet better training and racing. These women have spent many a hour logging mile after mile to get where they are. It is really nice for them to get this recognition they so deserve."

Leading the pack for the Scots is Sr. Julie Helm (Saint Joseph, Mich./Saint Joseph), who took 19th place in her first race this season with a time of 19:25. She would go on to improve her time by nearly a minute a week later by running a time of 18:38 in the Knight Invitational, good for a 22nd place finish.

Close behind are Jr. Anna Sall (Holland, Mich./Hamilton) and So. Misty Godley (Ithaca, Mich./Ithaca). Godley, in her first race this season, ran a 20:12 closely followed by a 20:16 finish from teammate, Sall to take 32nd and 33rd place. For the second race, Godley improved to 19:16 and Sall ran a 19:26, both times a great deal faster than what they had logged just one week prior.

Fr. Kara Giles (Ithaca, Mich./Ithaca) is a stand out newcomer this season. She ran a 20:42 in her debut race followed by a much improved 19:22 the following race. Look for Giles to not only improve throughout the rest of this season, but set the tone for her career as a Scot as well.

These certainly are exciting times for the Scots women's cross country team. They will continue to work hard this season to improve upon their already impressive start. They race next on September 21 in the MIAA Jamboree in Notre Dame, IN.
