Alma, Mich. – The Alma College women's volleyball team was dropped in the first round of the MIAA Tournament by Albion College 3-1 on Tuesday (Nov. 5) evening. The Scots finish the year with a 17-13 overall record and a 5-3 conference record. This is the second consecutive year Alma has hosted a conference postseason game.
Sara Majerle (Rockford, Mich. / Rockford) led the Scots with 20 kills. Kylie Sicken (Shelby Twp., Mich. / Utica Eisenhower) added six blocks and eight kills on a .412 hitting percentage. Georgia Miller (Georgetown, Ky. / Scott County) posted nine kills and 18 digs. Bailey Cantrell (Holt, Mich. / Mason) had a team-high 21 digs.
The Scots won the first set 25-20. Up 19-18, Alma reeled off six of the next eight points to go up 1-0. Majerle had two kills in the series, Cantrell had an ace and Alma got its 25th point off a block from Rachael Parrett (Gladwin, Mich. / Gladwin High School) and Haley Ullrich (Elk River, Minn. / Elk River).
The second set saw nine ties and six lead changes. The Scots scored five straight points early in the set and took a 13-12 lead, but the Britons scored the next seven points to eventually win 25-19.
The third set was even tighter than the second, though Alma's biggest lead was just three at 9-6. Still, the Scots managed to tie the set at 21 will a kill from Ullrich. Albion came up with the next two points and Alma was forced to chase the Britons to the 25th point and it came up just short. A kill from Majerle make it 24-23 Albion and the Britons scored the next point to take a 2-1 lead in the match.
Albion got out to a fast start in the fourth set with a 14-3 lead. The Scots were able to get to within six at 20-14 but could not get any further. Albion got the final point on a kill by Grace Winter.
