Kalamazoo, Mich. - The Alma College volleyball team came out victorious in both its matches on Saturday (Sept. 28), defeating Kalamazoo College 3-2 and Defiance College (IN) 3-1. The Scots move to 10-5 overall and 1-1 in the conference with their second win over Kalamazoo this year, while the Hornets fall to 10-6 and 0-2 and the Yellow Jackets drop to 12-6.
Game 1 – Alma 3, Kalamazoo 2
Alma started off strong with a 25-13 win in the first set but ended up being pushed all the way to the fifth set. The Scots dominated on the attack with 60 kills and a .242 hitting percentage compared to Kalamazoo's 46 kills and .100 hitting percentage. After being tied 6-6 in the final set, Alma went on a 9-3 run to seal the victory.
Sara Majerle (Rockford, Mich. / Rockford) and Georgia Miller (Georgetown, Ky. / Scott County) led the team in kills with 18 and 17, respectively. Majerle also added 27 digs. Haley Novak (Midland, Mich. / Bullock Creek) had 45 assists. Kylie Sicken (Shelby Twp., Mich. / Utica Eisenhower) had eight block assists and added seven kills in the match.
Game 2 – Alma 3, Defiance 1
The Scots got off to a slow start, falling in a close first set 25-23. They bounced back with 25-22 wins in the second and third set and closed it out 25-19 in the fourth. Alma dominated on the attack again with 62 kills and a .362 hitting percentage.
Majerle led all players with 24 kills and added 17 digs, while Novak tallied another 47 assists. Bailey Cantrell (Holt, Mich. / Mason) also had 17 digs for the Scots.
Alma travels down to Angola, Ind. on Wednesday (Oct. 2) to take on Trine University at 6:30 p.m.
