Greencastle, Ind. - The Alma College volleyball team split a pair of four-set matches on Friday (Sept. 13), defeating Whitman College (WA) and falling to Aurora University (IL).

Sara Majerle (Rockford, Mich. / Rockford) led all players with 19 kills against the Blues. Georgia Miller (Georgetown, Ky. / Scott County) had a game-high 19 digs and Haley Novak (Midland, Mich. / Bullock Creek) notched 38 assists. Rachael Parrett (Gladwin, Mich. / Gladwin High School) and Kylie Sicken (Shelby Twp., Mich. / Utica Eisenhower) each had five kills while Sicken added seven block assists.

Alma had a slow start to the match, falling 25-16 in the first set. The Scots were plagued by eight errors, including seven in a 12-point span.

They were on the verge of losing the second set, as well; an error from Majerle gave Whitman a 24-22 lead. But the sophomore outside hitter bounced back with four straight kills to give the Scots a 26-24 win.

Alma had its best game in the third set, jumping out to a 12-2 lead en route to a 25-18 win. It kept the momentum heading into the fourth set while also taking advantage of eight Whitman errors to win 25-22.

The Scots didn't fare as well in game two against Aurora. The Spartans had double-digit kills in each set, while Alma was set back by 26 errors. After dropping the first set 25-16, Majerle got the Scots one point away from tying the match at one at 24-20. But a ball-handling error gave way to six straight Aurora points, putting Alma down 2-0.

The Scots would hold on 25-23 to win the third set, one that saw 12 ties and eight lead changes. The fourth set got away from them and was all but over after a 13-2 Spartan run.

Alma returns to the DePauw University Tiger Invitational on Saturday (Sept. 14) for two more matches. It will play Elmhurst College (IL) at 12:30 p.m. and host DePauw University at 2:30 p.m.
