Lansing, Mich. - The Alma College volleyball team fell 3-0 to Hiram College (OH) on Friday (Sept. 6) evening in the first game of the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association/North Coast Athletic Conference Crossover Tournament. The loss is Alma's first of the season, making the Scots 4-1 thus far while Hiram improves to 5-1.
Sara Majerle (Rockford, Mich. / Rockford) posted a team-high 16 kills on a .400 kill percentage. Haley Novak (Midland, Mich. / Bullock Creek) added 21 assists and both Bailey Cantrell (Holt, Mich. / Mason) and Georgia Miller (Georgetown, Ky. / Scott County) had double-digit digs.
The Terriers had at least 14 kills in each set including a whopping 20 in the first. Alma was able to hang tough thanks to three aces and one block in addition to 11 kills but ultimately fell 25-23. Both teams hit over .300 in the set.
The second set also ended 25-23 but the journey was much different. The Scots and Terriers each hit under .170 and combined for 12 errors. Down 21-15, Alma went on an 8-3 run to make it 24-23 but was undone by one of its four errors. The Scots would go on to drop the third set 25-16.
The MIAA/NCAC Crossover Tournament continues on Saturday (Sept. 7). Alma will play Denison University (OH) at 10 a.m. and Ohio Wesleyan University at 2 p.m.
