Elmhurst, Ill. - The Alma College women's volleyball team tallied two wins on Friday (Aug. 30) to begin the 2019 season, defeating North Central (Ill.) 3-0 and Augustana (Ill.) 3-1.
Game 1 - Alma 3, North Central (Ill.) 0
Sophomore Sara Majerle (Rockford, Mich. / Rockford) led all players with 22 kills in game one while junior Haley Novak (Midland, Mich. / Bullock Creek) led everyone with 29 assists. The Scots hit .317 against North Central with sophomore Kylie Sicken (Shelby Twp., Mich. / Utica Eisenhower) leading the way with seven kills on nine attempts, good for a .778 hitting percentage; Majerle and Novak were both over .400. Majerle had five errors on 41 attacks — the rest of the team had six errors, combined.
Game 2 - Alma 3, Augustana (Ill.) 1
Alma took the first set 25-15 behind ten Augustana errors despite tallying four aces in the set. It dropped the second set 25-22 as the Vikings managed a match-high 13 kills, but the Scots bounced back to take the next two sets 25-20 and 25-11.
Senior Georgia Miller (Georgetown, Ky. / Scott County) led all players with 13 kills and 19 digs. Novak had 33 assists while Majerle added 11 kills and 12 digs. Freshman Rachael Parrett (Gladwin, Mich. / Gladwin High School) posted three kills on six attempts in her first collegiate action.
The Elmhurst College Tournament continues on Saturday (Aug. 31) as Alma takes on the host Blue Jays at 10:00 a.m. and the Greenville University Panthers at noon.
