Alma, Mich. - The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association announced its 2018 volleyball awards Friday (Nov. 2) and three members of Alma College's team have been honored.
Freshman outside hitter Sara Majerle (Rockford, Mich. / Rockford) and sophomore setter Haley Novak (Midland, Mich. / Bullock Creek) were named to the first team All-MIAA. While senior middle blocker Katie Bush (Lowell, Mich. / Lowell) was tabbed second team all-conference.
Majerle has come onto the scene in her first year as a Scot and been a major offensive threat for Alma. She currently leads the team in kills (287) and has the third best kills per set rate in conference. The outside hitter had 21 kills in the Scots win over Adrian on Oct. 10 The freshman also ranks second for the Scots with 306 digs and has had 13 doubles-doubles so far.
Novak took a big leap in production from her rookie campaign to her second year collegiately. After dishing out 330 assists last year, she currently has 875 this season, third most in the MIAA. The setter had a career-high 53 assists on Oct. 16 in a victory against Olivet. She was named Specialist of the Week twice by the conference this year.
Bush shined in her final year with Alma. She has already surpassed a career-high for kills in a season with 221. On Sept. 8, in the Scot's win against St. Mary's, the middle-blocker set a career-high in game with 17. Her .289 hitting percentage ranks sixth in the conference.
The Scots will play Hope College at Calvin College at 5 p.m. Friday (Nov. 2) in the MIAA Semifinals. The winner will advance to the conference championship which will be played Saturday (Nov. 3) at 7 p.m.
