Lake Forest, Ill. - The Alma College women's volleyball team won the Forester Invitational Tournament this weekend, picking up wins against the University of Dubuque, 3-0 (25-22, 25-19, 25-19), Lakeland College, 3-1 (25-20, 25-20, 24-26, 25-18), Lake Forest 3-0 (25-21, 25-22, 25-17) and Marian 3-1 (28-26, 25-22, 20-25, 25-21).
Sasha Laykova (Ternopil, Ukraine) led the Scots (4-1, 0-0 MIAA) with 20 combined kills and a kill percentage of 34 percent in the first two matches, while Madison Smith (Westphalia, Mich.) and Dakota Pelach (Gaylord, Mich.) finished right behind her with 19 combined kills. Smith posted a combined kill percentage of 55 percent.
The first match against Dubuque (0-1, 0-0 IIAC) was a back-and-forth battle. Alma's biggest lead in the first set was four after a kill by Kendall Sells (Muskegon, Mich.) made it 19-15. Dubuque then went on a 4-0 run to tie the set at 19, but the Scots scored six of the final nine points to take the first set.
The second set was also tightly contested - the score was tied at 11 until Alma went on a 6-1 run to take control at 17-12. The Scots maintained a five point lead through the rest of the set until Laykova's kill gave them the win at 25-19. Alma jumped out to a quick 3-0 and 5-2 lead in the third set before the Spartans went on a 6-0 run to jump ahead 8-5. They stayed in front until the Scots battled back to tie the set at 16 and again at 18. Alma then closed the match on a 7-1 run with two kills coming from Smith.
In the second match against Lakeland (1-1, 0-0 NACC), Laykova led the way for the Scots with 13 kills on 31 attempts for a kill percentage of 39 percent and also tallied 16 digs. Pelach and Smith registered 12 and 11 kills, respectively. Smith posted a kill percentage of 69 percent and added eight block assists, while Pelach had 27 assists - all three were team highs.
On day two, Laykova stayed hot with eight kills in the match against Lake Forest (1-3, 0-0 Midwest Conference). Sells and Georgia Miller (Georgetown, Ky.) finished behind her with seven kills each. Down 19-20 in the first set, Alma went on a 6-1 run to win the set 25-21. The second set saw the Scots jump out to a 12-6 lead before the Foresters went on a 5-0 run to get within one. Alma never gave up the lead, however, and won the set 25-22. The Scots had control of the final set, taking lead of 9-3 and 15-8 before sweeping Lake Forest 25-18 in the third set. The team also took its fourth and final match of the tournament against Marian (0-2, 0-0 NACC) 3-1.
The Scots return to action on Wednesday, Sept. 7 at Hope College.
