Naperville, Ill. - The Alma College women's volleyball team dropped its season opener against North Central College, 3-1 (25-16, 20-25, 25-17, 25-23) on Thursday evening.
Dorothy Buening (Pinckney, Mich.) led the Scots (0-1, 0-0 MIAA) with 10 kills on the day and was tied for the team lead in digs with 18. Just behind her in kills was Sasha Laykova (Ternopil, Ukraine) with nine and Katie Bush (Lowell, Mich.) with eight.
The Scots dropped the first set 16-25 before coming back and taking the second set 25-20, despite falling behind 11-8 early in the set. The score was tied at 13 before Alma scored the next three points and forced a North Central (2-0, 0-0 CCIW) timeout. The Scots kept the lead for the rest of the set, winning seven of the final ten points. Bush led the team with three kills during the run.
Alma kept the score close in the third set until the Cardinals went on a 4-0 run to take a 19-14 lead. They went on to win the set 25-17. The Scots retaliated with a strong start to the fourth set, taking leads of 9-3 and 12-5. After taking a 14-8 lead, North Central went on a 7-0 run to go up 15-14. The rest of the set was tightly contested - there were seven ties and two lead changes. With the score tied at 23, the Cardinals picked up the final two points to take the set and the match.
The Scots return to action on Friday when they travel to Lake Forest, Illinois to play in the Forester Invitational Tournament. They will take on Dubuque at 7:00 p.m. and Lakeland College at 9 p.m.
