Volleyball wins hard-fought five set match at Saint Mary's on Saturday

The MIAA Volleyball weekend schedule can be a challenge and the Alma College team faced just that on Saturday afternoon. Less than 18 hours after taking on a very tough Trine University team in Alma, the Scots had to travel to Saint Mary's to compete against an equally tough Belles squad.

After a 3-0 win on Friday night, the visitors had to scrape and fight their way to a thrilling 3-2 win over SMC. With the victory, the Scots improved to 4-2 in the MIAA and 9-5 overall, while Saint Mary's is now 8-6 in 2012 and also 4-2 in the league.

"We knew today was going to be tough for us after a short turnaround," said Scots Head Coach Sarah Dehring. "We played a very emotional match Friday night and then got up very early to make the trip to Saint Mary's. It feels great to get the win in a contest that was well played by both teams and could have gone either way. I am really proud of how our girls played this weekend and I believe it gives us positive momentum moving forward."

SMC took the first set by a score of 25-22, before the Scots won set two 25-23. The third set also went to Alma by a mark of 25-21 and then the Belles notched it at 2-2 with a 25-20 win. The fifith and final set was a nail biter as well, as the Scots held on by a score of 15-12 and secured the match victory.

Statistical leaders for Alma included Sr. OH/RS Katie Bourbonnais (Niles, Mich./Niles), who had 11 kills and 15 digs, while Jr. MH Rebecca Trosper (Plano, Tex./Lutheran North) had 14 kills and Jr. MH Lea Klooster (Jenison, Mich./Jenison) added nine kills.

Jr. S Erika VanHavel (Mason, Mich./Mason) had 18 assists and So. S/DS Tricia Smith (Morley-Stanwood, Mich./Morley-Stanwood) added 15 helpers. Jr. OH Kelly Maise (Northville, Mich./Northville) added 10 digs for the Scots in the win.

The Scots will next play on Wednesday evening when they travel to Albion College to take on the Britons. The match is scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m.
