Alma, Mich. - The Alma College women's tennis team defeated Defiance College 8-1 on Saturday (Oct. 5) from the Superior Street Tennis Courts. The Scots only dropped one singles match on the day, and won all three doubles matches.
In singles competition, reigning MIAA Player of the Week Brooke Butterfield (Portland, Mich./Portland) swept her Yellowjacket opponent in straight sets 6-1, 6-2. Abigail Davenport (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove South) also earned a straight set victory for the Scots. The junior won set one 6-2, and took the second set 6-1. Freshman Amanda Szymborski won her match in straight sets as well, easily defeating her Defiance opponent 6-1, 6-0. Sophomore Emily McDonald (Wheeler, Mich./Midland Bullock Creek) had the toughest match of the day. McDonald won the first set 6-4, before dropping set two 5-7. In the tiebreaker, McDonald got past her opponent 10-8. Sophomore Rachel Moran, earned the final singles victory for the Scots, winning in straight sets 6-2, 6-1.
In the doubles matches, the Scots won all three handily. Butterfield and Davenport earned a win 8-1. Szymborski and junior Lucy McCarthy (Rockford, Mich/Rockford) teamed up to win 8-2. The final doubles victory came from senior Bernadette Garibay (Lansing, Mich./Grand Ledge) and freshman Summer Stoldt. The pair earned an a easy win over their Defiance opponent 8-1.
This match concludes the fall season for the Scots. The team will start their spring season on Saturday (Feb. 22) against Franklin College (IN.).
