Battle Creek, Mich. - The Alma College women's tennis team swept Olivet 9-0 on Saturday (Sept. 22). The Scots dropped just one set the entire day in singles competition. Otherwise, seven of the other eight matches easily - by five games in doubles and all singles in straight sets.
The Scots are now 1-1; Olivet is 0-5.
How It Happened
- The team of Abigail Davenport and Hannan Hakim defeated Miranda Pier and Sydnie Weller 8-2 in the #1 doubles match. Sophomore Brooke Butterfield (Portland, Mich. / Portland) and sophomore Lucy McCarthy (Rockford, Mich. / Rockford) won 8-1 for the best doubles finish of the day. Freshman Bernadette Garibay (Lansing, Mich. / Grand Ledge) and junior Caroline Ross (Sandusky, Mich. / Sandusky) also won 8-3.
- Brooke Butterfield had the day's best singles match, as well, winning 6-1, 6-0 over Miranda Pier in the #1 singles match. Hannah Hakim also came away with a 6-0 sweep in the second set of the #2 singles match against Keely Cruz, taking the match 6-3, 6-0. Abigail Davenport and Sydnie Weller went to three sets which Davenport ultimately won 6-3, 2-6, 1-0 (10-7). Caroline Ross beat Haley Eversole 6-0, 6-2 and Lucy McCarthy took down Emily Foulk 6-2, 6-1. Finally, Emily McDonald won 10-8 over Alex Lesko in a one-set match.
The Scots have their first home match of the year on Saturday (Sept. 29). It will be against Grace College at the Superior Street Tennis Courts.
