Russell Scores Twice but Women’s Soccer Falls in OT

Alma, Mich. - The Alma College women's soccer team nearly came all the way back from down 2-0 to Mount St. Joseph on Sunday (Sept. 8) but ultimately fell 3-2 in overtime.

Lexi Russell (Williamston, Mich. / Williamston High School) scored two nearly identical goals from roughly 25 yards out late in the game to tie it at two. The Scots continued to apply pressure through the end of regulation and the first overtime, but the Lions prevailed in the 98th minute.

The Scots began the game slowly and the Lions capitalized, scoring twice in the first 28 minutes. It wasn't until the second half that Alma came alive and finally broke through on Russell's first goal in the 79th minute. Just over five minutes later, she scored again, this time with two defenders draped around her.

Alma was assisted by a red card given to Mount St. Joseph's Hannah Schloemer in the 71st minute. It was the only card given in the game.

Goalkeeper Ally Wentworth (Mt. Pleasant, Mich. / Mt. Pleasant) made eight saves, the most she has made in a single game this season.

Alma returns to Scotland Yard on Wednesday (Sept. 11) when it hosts Lawrence Technological University at 4 p.m. It is the last game of a five-game homestand for the Scots.
