Adrian, Mich. - Opening a three-match week, the Alma College women's soccer team defeated the host Adrian College Bulldogs, 4-3, Monday (Sept. 12) night at Docking Stadium. Junior Whitnee Foote (Mt. Pleasant, Mich./Mt. Pleasant HS) scored twice for the Scots, which won their third straight match.
Alma (3-1-0 overall, 2-0-0 Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association) was outshot in the contest by a 24-13 margin and overcame a 2-1 halftime deficit, scoring three goals in the final 45 minutes to remain one of two undefeated teams in the MIAA.
Junior goalkeeper Kelsey Postema (Marshall, Mich./Marshall HS) made 10 saves in net, including eight in the second half as Adrian (2-3-1, 0-2-1 MIAA) tried to force the equalizer.
"It's great to get another three points in conference play and even better to be able to do it on the road," Head Coach Ashley Bingaman said. "We came out great to start the first half and then Adrian turned a switch on and we didn't respond well enough."
"The way we came out to start the second half was inspiring to say the least. There really isn't anything this group can't handle."
Foote opened the scoring in the 10th minute, putting in a rebound off of her own shot, which went of the post. Adrian quickly responded, scoring less than two minutes later when Mackenzie Wilcox netter the first of her two goals in the 12th minute to tie the game. Wilcox scored again in the 25th minute to give Adrian a 2-1 lead heading into the halftime break.
In the second half, the Scots scored three times in the span of 15 minutes to open up a 4-2 lead. Senior Macayla Greiner (Hart, Mich./Hart HS) scored in the 48th minute to tie the game at 2-2, then Foote gave Alma the lead in the 52nd minute, heading the ball in off a corner kick. Freshman Lexi Moyer (Suttons Bay, Mich./Traverse City West HS) scored the eventual game-winner in the 63rd minute, finding the lower right corner of the net from the left side of the box for her third goal in as many games.
Adrian pulled within one in the 72nd minute when Claire Baghera scored on a header off of a free kick, but the Alma defense held on as Postema made three saves to preserve the victory.
The Scots return to Scotland Yard on the Alma College campus on Thursday, Sept. 15, hosting Olivet College for a 4:00 p.m. match.
