Scots Women's Soccer defeats Trine University on Wednesday to earn a berth in the MIAA Tournament

The Alma College Women's Soccer team entered Wednesday's match at Trine knowing that they needed to win to have a chance to participate in the MIAA Tournament. The Scots defeated the Thunder 1-0 and the other pieces fell into place and now Alma is the #2 seed and will take on Hope College on Friday afternoon at Calvin College.

The Scots will enter the tournament with an overall record of 13-5-2 and finished the regular season with a league mark of 10-4-2, while Trine concluded their season today with a MIAA record of 0-14-2 and 1-16-3 for 2012.

"The girls did a great job jumping all over them today, but we missed far too many quality chances in the first half," said Scots Head Coach Jeff Hosler. "Mackenzie was really dangerous in the first 45 and Autumn really gave us a lift with a great finish at the post to seal the win. It was a great time to score her first goal of the season.

"The girls have shown a great degree of focus in training and in our last three matches, and the results have followed with three consecutive victories by shutout. We are very excited for the MIAA Tournament and a shot at another NCAA Tournament bid."

Although the first half was scoreless, the Scots dominated play and had a 14-0 advantage in shots, including 6-0 in shots on goal. Alma was unable to capitalize on several good scoring opportunities and as a result, the game stood at 0-0 after 45 minutes.

Alma changed that quickly in the second frame when Jr. D Autumn Root (Haslett, Mich./Haslett) scored at 46:57 from the post on an assist from So. M Kailey Vlug (Coopersville, Mich./Coopersville). However, the Scots could not build on the 1-0 advantage and it was a fight to the finish that ultimately saw Alma prevail.

For the game, Alma outshot Trine 19-4, including 8-2 in shots on goal. Jr. GK Rachel Doptis (Macomb Township, Mich./Macomb Dakota) had two saves in earning the shutout victory. Fr. D Allison Smith (Commerce Township, Mich./Walled Lake Northern) paced the Scots with three shots, two on net, while So. F Mackenzie Smith (Saginaw, Mich./Nouvel) added two shots on goal.

Start time for the game between the Scots and the Flying Dutch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. on Friday. Calvin and Adrian will play at approximately 3:30 p.m. in the other semi-final.
