The Alma College women's soccer team took the field for their final match of their non-conference schedule against the DePauw University Tigers at Scotland Yard. The home team was victorious by a score of 4-1, bringing them to 3-1 on the season heading into MIAA play this week.
"We came out with a great sense of urgency and applied a lot of pressure to goal, however, our final touch let us down too often," said Head Coach, Jeff Hosler. "Our work rate and intensity were both very good. We just needed to work smarter. I thought we made that change in the second half and executed much better."
Alma took the lead early when So. M Kailey Vlug (Coopersvile, Mich./Coopersville) pushed a ball past DePauw keeper, Emma Copper, just inside of the near post 1:53 into the match. DePauw responded 17 minutes later when they combined a few quick passes and ricocheted a shot off the crossbar, evening the score at 1-1. The score would remain deadlocked until So. F Mackenzie Smith (Saginaw, Mich./Saginaw Nouvel) notched a goal just before halftime to give the Scots the 2-1 lead after 45 minutes of play.
The second half proved to be all Alma, led by the tenacious shooting of Smith. She connected for her second goal of the match, team's third, in the 56th minute for a 3-1 lead. The final goal of the game came from a set piece taken by Sr. D Brittany Dulyea (East Kentwood, Mich., East Kentwood), who played a perfect floating ball to the head of Fr. M Agatha Weddle (White Lake, Mich./Walled Lake Northern). Smith completed her hat trick as she was able to find Weddle's header and put it in the back of the net.
The Scots outshot the Tigers by a margin of 29 to 7 and So. GK Morgan Waier (Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand Blanc) recorded the victory in net for the Scots. The team will play next on Thursday when they travel to Adrian College to face the Bulldogs at 7:00 p.m.
