Alma's Becky Marton represents the Scots abroad

A senior on the women's soccer team, Becky Marton (Williamston/Williamston), was recently selected to travel with a group of other Division III athletes to Brazil and compete against various U23 national teams.

Among 440 Division III schools in the NCAA, each with about 25 player rosters, Marton was one of 18 selected to play. She will be the only player from the MIAA and one of two from the region.

"The first step for her being invited is because of our team success. It allowed players like herself to gain individual recognition," Jeff Hosler said, head coach of the women's program at Alma College.

After an NCAA appearance this past fall season, three members of the women's soccer team were recognized with First Team All-Region honors. Goalkeeper Monica Witt and forward Carly Reising, along with Marton, made school history with three players on a single team receiving this accolade.

"As we continue to have more seasons like that every year, it will allow more players opportunities to represent our country in this manner," Hosler said.

This opportunity not only allowed Alma College recognition on a national level but also gave a dedicated player one more opportunity to play competitively.

"At the end of the season, I wasn't ready to hang up my cleats just yet and this way, I didn't have to," Marton said. "I'm really excited for this opportunity to travel and play more of the sport I love."

Before traveling to Brazil the selected roster for Div III schools traveled to Florida for a training session and an opportunity to meet each other. While in Brazil, the team played a total of four games, finishing with a record of 1-2-1. Marton not only started every match, but she also played every minute of every game at various positions. She tallied two assists in her four national appearances for the squad.

"It brings a certain amount of attention to what we're doing here," Hosler said. "She's a fantastic ambassador for Alma College and our soccer program to represent us."
